When confronted with ‘take it or leave it’, the latter often seems the far more attractive option, at which point, you’d wish you were different.</p> <p>I guess.</p> <p>I’m clean and boring and can’t, won’t design elaborate cards so this is a compromise. Interaction. Hopefully a cheeky ‘your fly’s down’ scrawled across the coloured side or a flattering ‘schweet shoes’ would be enough to woo you (until I bleach my hair silver again, at least).</p> <p>The white box should be much bigger but I now have 200 cards and can’t go back. Propriety.</p> <p>Apparently the building used to be a school. So our second old man might’ve said. It was a smile-and-nod kind of conversation, alas, in <em>Chinese</em>, us being in Chinatown. I usually point out that my spoken Mandarin really isn’t as awful as you’d assume but this was painful, and it didn’t help that Darel chose the stand-by-the-side-looking-preoccupied option.</p> <p><span class="Apple-style-span">·</span></p> <p>Analog printing induction</p> <p>Paper: fiber > resin’s plasticy coating. Oftentimes I think the world should be matte. Our guide’s doing a double degree and is a member of (unknown) society & the vice-president of another, one of those over achievers. She’s <em>so</em> American—friendly, effervescent, a little in your face. I wonder how people function like that, it takes far too much effort. Mike keeps asking me if I’m bored, almost apologetic that he made the arts school kid walk through science labs, but it’s okay, I’m genuinely interested. I once topped the class in Physics, you know.</p> <p>Later it’s M for mocha at <a href="http://www.joetheartofcoffee.com/" target="_blank">Joe</a> where I’m all, this is <a href="http://instagr.am/p/Ihc3WDotKC/" target="_blank">beautiful</a> <em>(light streaming through windowed walls the red brick building across the street artsy guy in amazing printed shirt I could talk about this forever)</em> then sitting in the sun where we talk for hours getting a tan on half my body, still so enchanted by the weather, thinking, I wish I went to school here.</p> <p>Do I really? She eats a lot of not-as-tasty-as-yesterday’s honey wheat pretzel sticks over the five hours, talking to new friends who do same but different things. I feel like a child. They’re further along though we’re about the same age.</p> <p>Dianne’s clothes make me want to wear denim. My extensive jean wardrobe includes, and is limited to, some short shorts I refuse to try to wear because it’s been <em>that</em> long & an amazing children’s jacket with an iron-on teddy that oddly never sees daylight. Cindy Sherman’s on the top floor, I’m sorry I haven’t made it there yet. It’s taking a while.</p> <p>I know nothing about Ellen Gallagher’s work and shan’t attempt an impartial critique of the ‘<a href="http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1243" target="_blank">multivalent constellation of ideas</a>’ they offer but at least they’re visually appealling, as supeficial as that might sound. For all its intellectualism and social commentary, I still think art should be interesting to look at. I guess it’s easy for me, being the Singaporean that I am, to say that because we are pigeonhole-ers, that’s what we do. We draw lines of distinction and need to classify, identify because the world <em>must</em> function within set parameters. That’s where we find comfort—knowing that this is what I am, what he/she is.</p> <p>Carol said she should be able to see what makes me tick, what inspires me. She can’t because I don’t have an answer to that either. One moment we’re dressing five girls at a go <em>(take that dress off girl A and put it on girl B and put girl A in the trousers, oh wait, no, the long skirt)</em> and then it’s quiet for hours. It’s tiring for the girls too, running all over the city, from castings to shows to fittings and back again. I wouldn’t want to be a model. It’s hard.</p> <p>They try to wiggle themselves into impossibly fragile fringe dresses made of reflective safety mesh. They’re stunning, luminescing when they catch light, but so, so tiny with no room for lumps and bumps or even post-puberty hips. I can see pulling at the seams, ‘please stop moving’. They wiggle somemore, like how you’d squeeze into jeans that are meant to be your size. It’s painful. We’ve read articles about models’ self-esteem and you can see why—girls who try so hard to fit into these dresses, trying to pull them up just a little higher because ‘I’m not <em>that</em> big’.</p> <p>When your jeans don’t fit, you hand them back to the girl by the changing room saying, ‘nah, they weren’t for me’. You might feel a little shitty about yourself for a while but no one has to know. Here nothing’s hush-hush, and when the next dress still doesn’t fit, it’s devastating. When you’re young and impressionable, that sucks even more.</p> <p>Not that it’s the fault of anyone.
